The One ESSENTIAL Book
Ok I admit, I'm a huge fan of Nigel Calder and I would buy him a beer everyday of the week. He has saved my ass a lot.
He has saved me so much money it's just silly but more importantly time. This book has allowed me to find the root cause of the problem and either fix it or find somebody who can.
Is the book expensive, yes and no. It appears expensive when you are buying it, but when your anchor windlass has just failed in Fiji and you're trying to problem-solve why, this book feels like a bargain.
I would still open this book once every few months and I've been sailing for nearly 30 years. It's nice to have somebody to bounce ideas off even if it's just Nigels words on paper.
Just buy it and thank me later, or better still buy him a beer.

You need to read lots of books to learn loads about Yachts. What is important to you and your family, features you like and then what question to ask. Then you find people who own those boats, buy them lunch and ask those question.
One of the best books I read was Bluewater sailing on a budget, books like this discuss how much certain yachts cost to own and maintain. I love timber yachts but after reading about the time and work to maintain a timber, I chose fibreglass with beautiful Teak decks and then all alloy, I will never own teak decks again, love them but they are a labour of love and really hot in the tropics.
