Tanna Island

Tanna Island: Explore Mt Yazur, your easy access Volcanic Adventure

Tanna Island, one of the southernmost islands of Vanuatu, is a volcanic wonderland that offers a unique and unforgettable experience for travelers. With its towering volcanoes, lush rainforests, amazing clear water and friendly locals, Tanna is a destination that will leave you captivated.

Where to Anchor

I had planned to anchor in Port Resolution, with nearly every other yacht that visits Tanna Island. Its a logical choice, its on the Southern end of Tanna, is a natural harbour.  It is also beautiful, however the day I approached Tanna from New Zealand the ocean was angry and blowing its ass off with a 35knot South Easterly and big rolling seas. I knew if there were boats already in Port Resolution all the good anchorages would be gone and I'd be left in an exposed open roadstead rolling like a pig.

Port Resolution

It is beautiful on a sunny day when the seas were flat, yes it can be a little piece of  paradise, one day I will sail into the place and spend a week.

I decided the town of Lenakel was my best chance of a good anchorage, if I was going to find one. Lenakel has a reputation of being exposed to the swell and rolly. It felt a little exposed but given it was 30 knot off the land when we arrived the anchorage was flat, hardly any swell, our anchor was set and tested and set solid very quickly.

We anchored in 7m of mud near a small surf break. We had 50m of chain out and the Rockna never moved. It was a 200m dinghy ride to town just behind the concrete jetty in a small bay fringed with coral.

The bonus, town market was only 40m away and fresh water was also available at the market. The market operated 6 days of the week except day belome God.

Anchored Lenakel

200m from the market a safe distance from the jetty and ferries and 70m Nth of a small surf break TinTin sat quietly for a week on anchor just offshore and was quite comfortable with a strong offshore breeze blowing.

This market is only 40m from the dingy beach, there is a good selection of fruit and veg available. Water was also available here. We drank it, it was fine. Saved running my water maker for 3 hours, kept the crew busy when they were looking bored.

A Volcanic Paradise

The centerpiece of Tanna is Mount Yasur, one of the world's most accessible active volcanoes. Located on the southern tip of the island, Yasur erupts regularly, providing a mesmerizing spectacle of fire, smoke, and glowing lava. Visitors can hike to the rim of the crater and witness the volcano's raw power up close. The experience is truly awe-inspiring and should not be missed.

Standing next to the breathing beast that is Mt Yazur. We visited Mt Yazur on a pleasant clear day in May.

I was a little unsure about visiting an active volcano, I thought it would be really boring.

In addition there is the cost, the 8000 vatu park entry and another 5000 vatu for the tour vehicle to get there.

The tour was ok and I enjoyed visiting parts of the island, but the volcano was really awesome. The feeling of standing next to such a powerful breathing beast, it would often spit molten rock within 100m of where I was standing, then there was the retched sulpher fumes.

Would I go and visit it again, absolutely, loved it.

In hindsight the 20,000 Vatu for the Tour was cheap 50% of that would have been fuel, the 8000 vatu for the volcano park, was it value, to me yes, it also employs a number of local people and has a great little visitor centre.

Exploring the Island

Beyond Yasur, Tanna offers a variety of other attractions. The northern part of the island is home to the Lenakel Hot Springs, a series of natural pools with warm, mineral-rich water. Relaxing in these pools is a great way to unwind after a day of exploring.

For those seeking adventure, Tanna has plenty to offer. You can hike through the lush rainforests of the interior, swim in crystal-clear waterfalls, or explore the island's many caves. There are also opportunities to go snorkeling or diving in the surrounding waters, where you can encounter colorful fish and marine life.

Cultural Experiences

Tanna is home to a rich and diverse culture. The island's indigenous people, the Ni-Vanuatu, have lived here for thousands of years and have preserved many of their traditional customs and traditions. Visitors can learn about the Ni-Vanuatu way of life by visiting local villages, attending traditional ceremonies, or simply interacting with the friendly locals.

One of the most fascinating aspects of Tanna's culture is its kastom, which refers to the island's traditional customs and beliefs. Kastom plays a central role in the lives of the Ni-Vanuatu and is evident in everything from their language and music to their social structures and religious practices.
