Lets have a chat about exploring our World as a Solo or Short handed sailor
Enjoying the afternoon in my hammock, anchored off an island in the Kingdom of Tonga
This website is focused on Solo Sailing and short-handed sailing. The content and articles are written for people who want to develop their skills as a solo or short handed sailor.
Even Solo sailors need a community, I meet more sailors who solo every year, I also meet a growing number of couples sailing short-handed.
I felt it was time to develop a resource to help those new to Solo and Short-handed sailing, and also those wanting to develop the skills and find the tools and gear to solo safely on long Ocean passages.
There is no reason those new to sailing need to make the same mistakes. Learn what other Solo and Short-handed sailors have learned the hard way, over many years.
This website includes the following information and resources:
A blog detailing recent sailing trips, equipment that works, tips, and tactics. BLOG
The podcast where I talk about solo sailing, interviews with Captains and crew, and interviews with interesting people. PODCAST
Newsletter signup to receive our newsletter and receive great offers that we can pass on to the team.SIGNUP
Solo Gear, I detail the sailing gear that is essential to our success as Solo and Short-handed sailors. GEAR
Solo Guides, guides for anchoring, mooring, sleeping solo on passage, sail combos, and a great deal more. GUIDES
Destinations, every location I visit receives an information page, the aim is to make it easier for solo and short-handed sailors who visit in the future, Ports of entry to a new country also get a "sailor's guide to the first 48hrs" to make clearing in and customs just a little less stressful.
The Cache is where I bury all the valuable resources, sailing guides, equipment guides, destination guides, checklists
Crew opportunities
Do you want to learn how to solo on a real Ocean passage between countries?
Sailing with a skipper who solo's is the best way to learn, how to solo, what type of yachts to eliminate from your search, and even if this is the life for you, it's not for everybody.
One of my recent crew members wanted to buy a yacht and go sailing, after 3000nm and a bad Bass Straight crossing we established he was very susceptible to seasickness and that a light fast mono was a bad choice, sailing in southern waters and big swells also a bad choice, but maybe a multihull or a very heavy mono and sailing in parts of Asia may provide the opportunity to live the solo sailing dream he was looking for.
On a recent passage from Tonga to Fiji, Esther a crew member decided it was time to test herself. Esther took the opportunity to learn how to skipper a yacht Solo before committing to an RYA offshore skippers course back in NZ.
It was a rough 5 day Ocean passage to Fiji, Esther was a natural and took away valuable insights into what she needed to learn, and the equipment required to safely manage a yacht on the open Ocean. Esther also gained a new level of confidence in her own ability. We spent many hours discussing the types of yachts and autopilots suitable for Solo Ocean sailing.

Crew or no crew, sometimes solo is easier or essential, the joy of experiencing nature and meeting people living simple lives.
Join me as I plan and sail to various countries and discuss why I sail solo and with the crew, discuss the problems I encounter, and talk boat gear.
